Regeth,
I'm actually not using an octal cable. I have an AS2511-RJ router which using RJ to RJ rollover cables.
I rest a CCIE post about using labs vs emulators (ie GNS3) and the like, and how if your in the middle of a lab and GNS3 crashes its going to be a waste. You spend 2+ hours (he stated 6 hours) on a lab and you all of a sudden lose your work or can't connect, it will be quite aggravating.
This was the entire reason why I bought an access router, to connect to real equipment in the lab and not have to throw around a console cable.
I have not worked on any labs today, simply wasting time troubleshooting this issue. I am currently very irritated!!!! :x This is absolutely ridiculous!

Sorry, I didn't notice the title of the thread having the "RJ" in it.. now, you have said that you got it working by changing the config. Can you post it? Might I suggest using a terminal program that will log your connection. I use Sercure CRT. I know PuTTY does as well.

Not a problem Regeth, I just wanted to be sure you knew the exact model router I was using.
Here is the config:
Thanks for taking a look!

The only thing I can think of that could give you problems would be not setting the flow control and the stop bit. I’m not completely sure if it’s automatically set on the 25xx terminal servers. Here is what I use on my routers.
!
no exec
transport input all
stopbits 1
flowcontrol hardware
!
But everything else is good.

Regeth,
I can make that change and see if it helps, it surely couldn't hurt.
Let me run something by you. When the 2511 connects to other devices it opens up a console session. Do you think sometimes that session doesn't close, therefore when I return the next day I can't connect because you can have only one console session at a time. I don't believe the 2511 will close out the session, unless your power cycle the unit.
Just a thought.
Cheers,
