I guess what I was getting at was the fact that they do not test their products as much as they should before releasing it.

I do like XP and alot of products that they sell, just hatted going through all the crashes and issues when I first upgraded to it.

I am going to be going to vista soon, but I wish they would test it more. Thanks for the tip about Sophos AV, I'll chect it out.

Although I do agree with you about not being enough testing, I think it's helpful to remember that Vista has been in the making for five years. Postponing the release of Vista would have been the last thing Microsoft, its partners, and its consumers would have wanted.

OneCare's failure really makes you wonder if Microsoft's efforts to improve security was really what it made it out to be, or if it was just another form of marketing. The amount of attention Microsoft has placed in its strive in "securing" its OS makes it seem as if security has become its new priority and specialization. But then you read articles about OneCare or Defender failing miserably in security tests.....

But I'll remain optimistic and hope that when I do begin testing Vista, that it will be more secure.

Rule of thumb I always use with new OSs is never put anything out there in userland without at least a year of it being on the market and has at least Service Pack 1.

Apart from possible bugs, the userbase has to learn the new OS and this can have a significant downturn on productivity. New OS rollouts in the workplace do take a great deal of planning and pre-training especially with the thick userbase I have.

Today there has been an update to this thread with a second series of tests for OneCare.

news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6418965.stm

I love the line "OneCare was the only failure among 17 anti-virus programs tested by the AV Comparatives organisation. Microsoft's software only spotted 82.4% of the 500,000 viruses that the independent group subjected it to."

That's 90,000 virii it failed to spot.... holy god!

Oh dear... I wonder if even avg was one of the others

How do you know for sure ? Just because your antivirus says "All Clear" after a scan doesn't necessarily mean it is. What it is actually saying is "You don't have any of the virii I know about". There is a big difference.

If other vendor's solutions know about 90,000 other virii then that doesn't say a lot for it.

Same goes for antispyware software.

I'm not an MS basher but this was touted as being a cureall and nothing else would ever be required hence the shrieks from other vendors when they wern't allowed to get as close as they need to the core.
