the IP address is registered correctly with the DNS server.

Hi,
What happens when you ping d5cfacef-9c80-46f0-a153-b6dd83d895fa._msdcs.domainname ? Does it bring back an IP Address ?
Sounds like the GUID record isn't in DNS Correctly. This may need to be added into your DNS (not sure where it has gone though ?). We have the same issue in our infrastructure when we add new domain controllers. For some reason the DCPromo dosn't create all the necessary DNS entries and this is the one that is missing.
You can confirm the GUID for the domain controller by going into the "Active Directory Sites and Services" snapin, expand the server till you get to the NTDS Settings and then right click on NTDS Settings --> Properties. On the General tab you will see the DNS Alias, i would imagine it reads the same as above.
We need to resolve this failure before we can start to look at further issues.
Cheers
Wayne

Hi chandak76,
Two servers ? Can you confirm what you mean here ? I was assuming that this was a single Forest/Domain with 1 domain controller in it ? Is this not the case ? If not, where is the "Old Server" ?
Also, what server is d5cfacef-9c80-46f0-a153-b6dd83d895fa._msdcs.domainname pointing to ?
Cheers

Like I said earlier that I've discovered that after upgrading to server 2003 with a new server they left the old server on the network and it is being used as sql server. This was done about 10 months ago but the problem only started now.I sorry maybe I didn't make that vey clear. It is also the alternate dns coz theprefered dns is at the isp premises.

I must add that I'm about to take over this network and I don't have any documentation whatsoever.I'm just trying to put the puzzle together and maybe redesign the network depending on what I gather.
