I think, your PC is low on *Virtual Memory*. When you are playing games or have lot of open applications and when your OS tries to swap, it does not have enough Virtual Memory and may be this is causing the System Crash. Try increasing the size of Virtual Memory and also Clear the contents of your Page File when you shutdown your computer.

System Properties -> Advanced Tab -> Performance Options -> Virtual Memory, click change. Change the Intial Size and Maximum Size to the same size and select set and ok.
Try 1.5, 2.5 & 3.5 times your amount of physical RAM. But make sure it does not exceed 512MB.

--One of the articles I've read mentioned not to go beyond 512MB.
The recommended minimum size is equivalent to 1.5 times the RAM on your computer, and 3 times that figure for the maximum size. For example, if you have 256 MB of RAM, the minimum size is 384 MB, and the maximum size is 1152 MB.
The above statement is directly from the MS Website. Check the below link.
support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308417
So the limitation of 512MB might not be correct. So the Maximum anyone can go is 3 times the size of RAM.
For pauljc, whatever is your RAM increase it to 3 times and see if you notice any difference.
How to change the size of the virtual memory paging file & How to optimize the memory usage are good reads in the link.

Its actually a bad idea to increase the swap size *after* the disk has been fragmented, because this gives you a fragmented swap file... load up your disk in diskeeper or something similar and you will see the swap file in two or more parts.. this is supposedly not good for performance..
For optimum performance, the swap should be at the start of another hard disk and should not be fragmented.. in other words, it should be allocated completely from the beginning.
Cheers,
