I personally cannot think of any but i would image others in here can come up with valid reasons. Generally, workstations are not critical to the network (i.e. if the odd one went down you wouldn't really be too bothered) however switch, routers, firewalls, etc... are critical components so you would want to know how these are performing and if they died, etc...

I agree. I was just looking into the bandwidth usage information, but I will just get that from the switch as you suggested.

Smurf's right; if traffic information is all you want just use the switch, it's far easier

What else could I learn havinf SNMP on the workstations over getting information from the switch?

Depends a bit on the implementation of SNMP on the PC. The standard network stuff of course, but there's a Microsoft MIB as well plus you might be able to get hardware related info. And the other thing that might be useful is to have the PCs send traps to your NMS when things happen

Bishop,

Do you have a resource that I can look into regarding this?
