I run a whole load of distros under VMware just fine.. I've run
Redhat
Fedora
Suse
Debian
Knoppix
Gentoo
Slackware
All come up with X just fine.. check the VMware help for specific instructions for different distros.
Yes knoppix can be installed to the hard disk.. drop to root and type
knoppix-hd <press tab>

yeah i think i know the problem. it was my monitor somehow it dies when loading the x server..probably it has somethinbg to do with the resolution. by the way how can i change the resolution of knoppix when loading.
also, i have downloaded helix, a decendant of knoppix i suppose
i see that this live cd has a lot to offer. aside from being a live cd, what other capabilities that this baby can do?
thanks again for the replies.. expect more quetions from me as i am beginning to "see"..... the brighter side of the open source world...

sahirh now that you mentioned Red Hat...i recently downloaded a red hat 9 distro and was installing it on vmware. i've done the things like testing each cd and stuff...upon installation, i got the 1st cd to install perfectly but when i popped in the 2nd cd it was asking that a file was missing or corrupted and that it could be that the cd was bad. so again i downloaded another 2nd installer at a different ftp site and tested it again and it passed the test however when i installed it again the same error occured.
the error has something to do with the a pdf somehting ( i can't remember) on its string (i think its x2pdf file )..hehe
when i installed it i chose the different options of the distro to be a server and a personal workstation but either work.
i'm just confuse since when i tested the cd all passed the test but when i installed a problem occured...
i hope you could provide me with advices or suggestions on how could i go about in doing this..i'm just excited to know lhow the penguin works

If you tested the ISO in comparison to the prototype at the place from where you downloaded it and it was exactly the same, yet it hits in a particular place during the installation, it is possible that the mirror server that distributes the iso has corrupted it during his syncronization with the main servers. Both ftp mirrors could have gotten the same corrupt version from the same mirror, or one from an other. You could try downloading it again, preferably from ftp.redhat.com. Still I would recommend that you stay away from redhat 9 as it is possibly the worst redhat distribution ever (and redhat distibutions in general, are not my favourite anyway!). Still, if you like the style of redhat, you should consider fedora core 2 instead, it works flawlessly in 3 servers where I use it (in contrast to redhat 9 that has proved to me quite a fragile and problematic distribution). From rpm-based distributions, I have only good things to say about CentOS and trustix, but they are mostly server-oriented and less preconfigured for Desktop use.
PS. Something irrelevant I am curious about, how is the market of ISP in Philippines? How affordable are broadband connections there and how are the speeds?

by the way the ISP industry here in the philippines is just doing great. people here are starting to go IT although we still lack the necessary resources for equipments and the like. broadband services are very affordable and reasonable., with foreign investors setting the industry here.
hey i'm currently downloading the rh9 distro from your suggested ftp site. and also some linux developers here in our country made their own version of the penguin. its called bayanihan linux and it can be located at www.bayanihan.gov.ph .
