Try listing all the machines in lmhosts and distributing that round all the machines. I've seen the browser and name resolution not work right before with similar configurations. Also, don't forget that with a workgroup you'll need to have appropriate user accounts locally on each machine if you want them to interoperate. And the accounts are significant on 98 too - so make sure you're logging into 98 as some definite user and not just clicking Cancel at the prompt. Then have that user listed explicitly on the destination machine and vice versa

Setting the password on the Win98 system did indeed work.
However I cannot “browse any Networked system, but I can add Shared folders manually, quite a drag on a large network (without a DNS).
