Now I have played with Packet Tracer yet, and I believe they just released a new version. How do the two compare?

The main difference is that GNS3 is an emulator. Meaning that it uses the same IOS images used by real routers. You can say it's a "Virtual Machine" but for the router. Actually GNS3 is just the GUI interface, the emulator engine is called "Dynamips" as noted by ramhuliyar above.
Packet Tracer however is a simulator. It has a crippled down version of the IOS. It can't run the real IOS image. However, one advantage of PT is that it's not CPU intensive like GNS3. Besides, as you know it has some cool quick tools such as easily supporting PCs, Hubs, Switches, tracing,wireless... etc.
