What is wireshark and what does it do?
Wireshark is a wonderful sniffer. It captures packets and decode them for you. For more info about it go on the website !

behind wireshark is the same guy who made ethereal, right?
Yes! He had some problem with his employer who owned the ethereal trade mark. And as he left his employer he had to change the name of his sniffer...
From Wikipedia :
The name was changed to Wireshark in June, 2006, because creator and lead developer Gerald Combs could not keep using the Ethereal trademark (which was then owned by his old employer, Network Integration Services) when he changed jobs. He still held copyright on most of the source code (and the rest was redistributable under the GNU General Public License), so he took the Subversion repository for Ethereal and used it as the basis for the Subversion repository of Wireshark.
It appears that Ethereal development has ceased, and an Ethereal security advisory recommended switching to Wireshark.

thnx ill check it out. I've used ethereal before it's extremely powerful.
My Father has his master's in Networking and Telephony and they made him use ethereal to hack into servers for his college courses it was pretty sweet to watch him do it.
and it's amazing how easily you can get into a server using ethereal. It literally takes under 2 minutes even with security in place.
Also I should point out we weren't braking the law because we did it under controlled circumstances and had permission to do it.
