Hi Solo,

I believe Promiscuous & non-promiscuous modes are used in bridges & other devices but I dont think they are the states of NIC.

Hi Vilasini,

s0lo is correct, NIC's can run in promiscuous mode but not in its standard installation. Usually when you install something like Ethereal or Microsoft Network Monitor, a special driver is installed to run it in Promiscuous mode otherwise the network capture will only be for unicast traffic to that specific host or broadcast traffic, therefore it would be no use.

Excuse me if i am wrong i have Network IDS which run on Windows 2000. I have removed bindings of TCP/IP and then the Nic is in promisious mode. Teh server has 2 nics one in promiscious and one in normal mode.

Vilasini, are you talking about the various states the NIC can adopt/go through at different points in its operation? Like listening, transmitting etc?
