Put a section on the CV to describe the (IT) work you've been doing at the small company too. Experience is what sets a candidate apart from the pack. These days employers want to feel they are taking on someone who can hit the ground running and be instantly productive for them; they don't want to spend the time training you. So list every bit of practical experience you can - projects undertaken, problems overcome, times you had to think on your feet and saved the day etc. As the others have said, even if it was unpaid or voluntary work, or a project you undertook at home for your own benefit, it can still count

One thing I want to emphasize from TheBishop's post. Clearly state what you have achieved technically in your experience and what problems you have solved.

They will employ you to solve problems and not because you have a certification. Showing that you are a good problem solver by hands on experience is the key to getting any job.
