hi

try the PCs that are not working the way they suppose too. what i mean try looking for those that are not functioning properly. those that are being denied of services such as internet for example is sometimes cause by a virus or an exploit in the system. personally, i don't rely much on softwares to find the infected ones for me as sometimes viruses have means of blocking the capacity of these softwares when scanning. also viruses tend to hide and virtually be undetectable to its users and softwares alike. so try to use both logic and technical skills in looking for the infected ones. the instinct of an IT is often than not right at the first time.

Yeah there was that real nasty malware that detected that it was hooked up to a debugger or being watched by behaviour analysis tools and would blow everything up.

Nasty nasty...

God help us when someone truly gifted in C / ASM decides to write something really lethal.. not the VB code that these children put together by pressing ctrl+c ctrl+v

or maybe someone already has........

hhmm...that's alot of hosts... :D ...i think the best way is to have your users help also in determining the problem...since they are the ones using their pcs everyday let them report to th IT any abnormalities that they may encounter using their workstations. upon receiving reports, then you could isolate the said pc from the network and from there you could start your investigation.

/How about a firewall?

Run *dcomcnfg.exe*. I think it's in your %systemroot%\system32 folder. On the Default Properties tab, Uncheck *Enable Distributed COM On This Computer*.
