Cisco PIX 501

I just got a Cisco PIX 501 Firewall and I wanted to know if anybody knows how to access the GUI with the cat5 to serial port cable. Want to learn the Cisco PIX so if anybody knows anything about them or sites to check out let me know please. Thanks

Hmm INACPE (Im not a cisco pix expert) but it sounds to me like you're talking of a rollover console cable. You may need a DB-9 adapter for the RJ-45 end.. though normally this is supplied.

Just connect the cable to the 'console' port (might be marked con 0 0), and then fire up hyperterminal.. choose the COM port you're connected to and use the following settings

Baud : 9600
Data bits : 8
Stop bits : 1
Parity : none
Flow control : none

(or you can just click 'defaults')
You should now have access (btw this exactly how you configure Cisco routers and switches from console)

Allow me to teach you one simple thing... when the name on the device says Cisco.. the only place you should look is www.cisco.com their knowledgebase is the most comprehensive.. and the most accurate. You'll find command references, basic setup, installation tips.. you name it. The site is actually not as difficult to navigate as it seems.

Btw do you have much networking experience ? That will go a long way with learning stuff... and if you've ever touched a cisco switch or router with IOS then you should be perfectly at home in the PIX.

Oh yeah one more thing.. theres a good chance there'll be a web administration module that you can connect to through a browser. Obviously this will only work once you've done all the base configuration of interfaces and actually integrated it into the network.

But if you wanna learn how to use the damn thing.... don't avoid the command line interface.. thats what separates the men from the boys... the Mirosoft Certified-somethings from the Cisco Certified-somethings (lol bring those flames on )

To access the GUI mode of the pix firewall do the following steps

1) Get and access to the (config t) mode of the pix firewall
2) Type a command http 0 0 inside
3) http server enable
4) Write memory
5) Go to the web browser and type https://ip_address of the inside interface of the pix firewall
Note : You can check the ip address of the pix firewall with the command "Show ip"

Also incase you have the out of the box pix firewall just go to browser and type in https://192.168.1.1 and hit enter.

You would be prompted for the security aleart and then just press yes to it.

Regarding the original question, if you really want to learn the PIX well, I highly recommend not using the GUI. The commandline is not all that complex and is much faster. You will also find that many companies have the GUI turned off, for security and performance reasons, so it is best to learn commandline configuration.
