Do Cisco routers not like the prefix notation for the subnet?

As far as I know, It depends on the command. For ip address, NO. But for example in DHCP pools, you can do network 192.168.1.0 /24

What about show control serial 0 and show run for each router?

Sounds more like a problem in the physical level/layer. So I'd check that the two heads of the serial cable is firmly connected. How about trying another cable. I doubt it's a clock rates DCE/DTE problem, since it should have shown UP in status and DOWN in protocol.

Posting a show run of both routers might help us as SteveP recommended

I reseated the cables and changed the encapsulation to ppp. I can now send pings between both routers. Pulling and running cables in a Cisco network can always dislodge and disconnect cables. This proves to show that one should never overlook troubleshooting at the physical layer. If your sure its not the physical layer ...check one more time to be extra sure!!!

Thanks for the help guys!!
