I've PM'd the config for all three routers plus the output of the show versions. Is it possible this is an IOS 'feature' that might be cured by a later version?

I would definatley say try and update, there are some strange things that can happen thats often down to the IOS Image.
I will try and take a quick look at the code when i get chance (stressing about the exam already and its 5 week off, lol)
Do you not have any Cisco SmartNET Contracts on these routers ?

Very interesting and challenging problem you have there Bishop.
The problem can't obviously be the interconnection between the site routers since you are able to telnet to site 2 & 3's routers, so the path to them checks okay.
Since the firewalls on each site are identical and not connected between each other, it can't be an xlate entry (tcp/udp connection) waiting to expire on the firewall side (assuming a pix firewall here).
The only 'logical' conclusion here is that you've got a problem with the 801 router and possibly a bug in the IOS; Considering its a 801 - which is a very old model, its highly likely that the problem is there.
Any way you can swap it with another router for testing purposes ?

I think I agree that it's likely to be a bug/feature.
Might be able to try a different router on the test bench but then if it works there's the problem of the 'real' router(s) which are out and about in various remote locations.
Other than that I'll have to figure out a way to get a login to the Cisco site to get the latest IOS
