Just in case anyone comes across the problems the Bishop and I experienced on the Windows 2K server located on the network we run for our church ...
The server suddenly started behaving strangely. It wouldn't access certain folders such as c:\Program Files or the Add/Remove Programs applet in Control Panel. In addition, Internet Explorer would hang whenever internet access was attempted. We seriously thought there was some kind of virus/trojan problem.
As with most things the explanation turned out to be quite innocent. A Java component used by the APC software had a digital certificate which expired on July 27th, 2005 and the problems began to surface on the first server restart after that date.
See the following Microsoft KB for steps on how to fix the problem ( support.microsoft.com/kb/555386/en-us ). It also contains the relevant SUN and APC links.
