Try 'startx'

I run RedHat only, and don't have any desktop because I only access the system via SSH (apart from installation obviously).

The admin might also want to rename the Linux & Unix forum to
*nix, so we can also talk about minix and other operating systems with nix in =)

Manip your the man!! :D startx is the command to boot into the desktop. Thank you very much sir!! I really appreciate it!!

ZiPPy

P.S. How old are you, into puters heavily, what do you do on them...if you don't mind me asking. Just curious to know a bit about you, you seem really intelligent about puters.

Zippy,

If you wish you make the graphical GUI permanent you need to edit one file, that is \etc\inittab.

There will most probably be a entry similar to this:

id:3:initdefault:

Change the 3 to a 5 (X11):

id:5:initdefault:

That will force the system to boot into the X11 (Xwindows) interface.

Cheers,

Chris Partsenidis.

Hmm i hate to stray off topic, but Manip that story bout the ISP was hilarious ! Are you running RedHat 9 ? I've currently got three machines up at home, one winxp box, one redhat9 and one mandrake 9.1 . These days I find I spend more time in the mandrake box though.. i don't know why.
