Internet is working perfectly but not able to ping that system from anyother system but the connection can be established after connecting to other system from that system, the OS being used is windows 2000 professional with latest service pack.

Hmm, don't you just hate those situations that seem to defy logic?Give us a little more info:
Are you pinging by computer name or IP address?
How are your IP addresses allocated (fixed or DHCP?)
What OS is on the other machines?
And do you have a personal firewall running on the problem machine?

I'm a little lost as to what he meant as well...
off the top of my he might need a DNS entry.. I'm guessing he can't ping the name but is connecting by IP...

This problem is due to Corrupt winsock. I don't know why this problem is emerging these days so quick. Everybody having this problem, don't know the coz behind corrupt winsock. For ur solution use this command
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
IF this doesn't help then u gotta search for WINSOCK XP fix tool in google. IF u can't find the email/PM me for the tool. I have it in my gmail box.
