First of all , kindly explain , that how are you running a server on a Win 98 machine ?? Frankly speakin, i didn't think it was possible to have servers runing on a 98 machine. Also , u say u have designed it in Front page ??.... I think there is some confusion here...kindly elaborate more on as to what exactly u have done .

I don't see why not. Win98SE even come with a basic http server (Personal Web Server)
Still kkdeepam it would be helpfull to know what server you use, i.e. if it is apache htaccess could be the solution.

In add/remove programswindows setup i enabled internet tools and online services and by that i got a web folders icon in my computer. In that i created(named) a default page with front page which opens with my lan ip in the lan. From there i gave other links to various pages.
This is what i have done.I was suggested by my colleague to do this and it worked. (He further could not help mee bcos he works on linux and knows not much on windows operating systems)
I think u can guide me well now.......

well, MS Personal Web Server is a deprecated product and lacks flexibility - features (actually windows 98 are quite obsolescent too). My advise is to move to
Apache
and if possible windows 2000 or at least NT (since you propably want to stick to the windows family). To the subject now, PWS doesn't support what I understood that you want (per-directory access control). As a matter of fact, from what I've found searching, PWS under win98 doesn't support any kind of authentication (under windows NT it could be configured to use authentication but in a far from ideal implementation).

google:
Apache for Windows
.htaccess
but besides that.. you really shouldn't run a webserver on windows 98... wait, let me say that again....
you REALLY shouldn't run a webserver on Windows 98.
