exchange and pop3 host email.. internal sending was created by Kn1ght
hello again I have another issue, (you live you learn) I have a small domain (sbs2003 xp pro )of 6 computers but 25 users about 10 of them have no profile they are on a roaming mandatory profile called "user" with a generic password. These users have a link on their webpage that takes them to their webmail (just a normally hosted pop3 account) A program on their SBS server (popcon) goes out and downloads the email of everyone with an exchange/AD account and plops it into their exchange box. it works great... except for the people without an exchange account. If someone from INTERNALLY sends an email to someone else internally the server sees it, and knows there is no exchange box and bounces it back. I hope I am being clear, any thoughts on this?
Thanks

in order for Exchange to recieve and Distribute Email there needs to be an account for each email address.
The email domain(s) is specified in the recipient policy, so each user in AD will recieve a mail address at each domain setup in the policy.
exchange with 3rd party tools or SBS pop3 collector can collect from external pop3 accounts and be mapped to internal AD users.
you must have a mailbox for each user.
im not sure exactly what you are trying to do and forgive me if im teaching you to suck eggs.
i believe you have a Generic user with a Webmail shortcut which takes them to a Hosted pop/imap account where they send recieve email?
this should not affect local exchange server because it is web-based and mail is handled by the hosts MTA.
however all local users with AD acounts should happily be able to send locally to all other AD users without a problem, if not check the recipient policy and check each users email address tab in AD properties.
I take it that all your mail is handled by an ISP/Host via pop3 for all users not just the generic users?
and i take it your Exchange server is setup with the same Domain internally as Externally, ie you have MX records for test.com that point to your ISP/Host externally, and your exchange server/AD is setup as test.com?
Mail will fail to users with generic user accounts because they have no mail account locally.
some options.
1. Do not use Exchange as an Outbound SMTP server, create a phony POP3 account and only specify teh SMTP settings of you POP3 hosts on the net, user will have a drop down box in outlook which will allow them to send from the new pop3 account, and will by pass exchange and be delivered.
2. Create AD accounts for each user, im not sure why you would want to use generic accounts for Temps or whatever, then best way is alwasy to create User accounts and set the users permissions and even there expiry time.
