i mean, maybe the "ICMP reply" for the Vista machine is Disable..
and if you'll take the trouble to enable the "Allow ICMP Reply" for both machine then your problem is solved.

I'm on XP sp2 and don't have a firewall running.. The service is disabled.
Is there something else besides the firewall?

aside from firewall, ICMP can also be configured in XP machines.
you can disable your firewall and still can choose not to reply from "ping requests" from other machines. it can be seen at the Advance tab of the Windows Firewall Configuration.
as sose posted regarding ping problems of two machines.

Hey
There must be a firewall running on the vista machine or a thirdparty AV/Fiirewall running,
Reboot the vista macine and the xp into Safemode with Networking.
just double check that the built in Firewall on both machines are disabled, and no 3rd party software is loaded.
Then try again.
you could also try using different IP Settings i.e 10.0.0.1 - 255.255.255.0 and 10.0.0.2 - 255.255.255.0
just to try everything.
