No network provider accepted the given network path...

I have several computers that are all configured as such:

Windows XP
Part of a domain
Folder redirection of Desktop to a DC/File server
Auto Login using a custom GPO
Login Scripts that launch programs

I receive this message when the computer starts:

\\server\users\computer\Desktop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you access permissions. No network provider accepted the given network path

This causes the desktop icons to not appear.

I can open my computer and navigate to \\server\users\computer\Desktop (while the error is on the screen even) and get to the desktop.

I have checked all folder and network resource permissions.

I can hit F5 and it will refresh the desktop icons. The problem only seems to happen when power on the computer. If I restart or log off/on everything is fine.

There is one more error that may be relevant:

The name "Domain Name :1d" count not be registered on the interface with IP address a.b.c.d. The machine with the IP address w.x.y.z (My Domain Controller's IP) did not allow the name to be claimed by this machine.

The IP address a.b.c.d is not even the IP address that the PC has. I also checked DNS and DHCP for duplicate/strange entries.

Not sure what else to try. Thoughts?

Hi there,

Not sure on your first issue but for this issue try going into the cmd line and type " set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1". Then go into the device manager click on show hidden devices and see if any hidden NICS appear if so remove them as you may have hidden NIC's still with bindings trying to register themselves.

Check the event log on the local machine, it should help you identify this problem. I have seen it before and all i remember is that the event log helped me track the issue down.

The machine which is rejecting the host's attempt to register itself I assume its your DNS box is it also your WINS server if your DNS is correct then perhaps it is a WINS issue? My previous post was perhaps a little unclear i didn't mean you have actual physical hidden NIC's naked to the human eye :) what i meant was that maybe you have IP information bindings still in the reg due to old driver's from either your current NIC's or perhaps old physical NIC's that have been replaced. Please keep us posted on this as im keen to see the resolution.

Cheers and good luck.

Here is an update. I was looking through Event viewer for some additional answers (thanks Smurf, I overlooked one) and I ran accross an error that is caused by the Fast Login feature of Windows XP. Normally, with roaming profiles, this feature is desabled. I am using roaming profiles with folder redirection and while I was trouble shooting this issue before I removed the path in for the user account's profile (essentially removing roaming profiles) thinking this may be the problem. I still had folder redirection though.

I added the paths back to the user accounts, which I assume disabled the fast login feature of XP.

Does anyone know if you can use folder redirection without roaming profiles? Could that have caused the problem?

I completely shutdown the PC twice and it logged in fine and showed all desktop icons. I will keep an eye on it and see if that resolved.

Also, I checked to see if there were "hidden" NICs in hardware manager and there were none.
