The best way and the simplest method to move the file shares without losing the permissions is to use NTBACKUP(The default backup software provided by Windows ). Whenever a folder is backed up using NTBACKUP, it retains the file and folder permissions. This has worked for me. Hope this is what you are planning to achieve and if you wish to move the file shares across to a new server then you can also have a look at FSMT(File Server Migration Toolkit.) But it only works if the destination server where the shares are being moved to is Windows server 2003
