hi,
first things first :
1) check if your microphone is connected to the correct port of your sound card. the sould card backplate will show with diagrams, which device connect into it, or out from it, e.g. symbols for speakers, symbols for microphones, auxilliary output etc.
2) some microphone leads have a volume up-down and a cut out switch on it, make sure the volume is up to a workable level, and make sure the switch is not set to Off position
3) check on your volume control menu, if mic input is turned on or off. check input volume level as well. check if the mic section has a check box which is set to mute, and that box has a tick in it, don't worry because that wont effect your recording. this box is used to allow or disable loopback of mic input into the speakers or headphones. unchecking it might cause feedback
4) are you using any special software to record sound. then make sure mic is enabled on it's sound input menu. this is also crucial for softwares which allow sing-along facility along with any track.

Also if you're using a laptop check whether it has a built-in mic. If your external mic is not properly plugged in or in the wrong socket it might not be deactivating the internal one
