QUESTION - FAT OR NTFS

Once your server comes up it can access whatever volumes it has, whether FAT or NTFS. However a boot floopy such as a Windows 98 boot disk can't access NTFS volumes, so if the drive your server's OS is installed on is NTFS you can't boot from floppy and repair it. As I said, this is all a bit academic now, and it's actually a major drawback in terms of security. You wouldn't want to do this unless you could be sure your computer room was secure

hi bishop,
that insight is quite interesting, because considering how loosely packed win 98's security structure is, i am thinking how many win nt domains will indulge in having the boot drive having FAT. but then again, this is security against making something within the range of full recovery

Worth noting that you can use NTFS2DOS which will allow you to access the NTFS volume's in DOS mode (bypassing the NTFS Security). Obviously it will not work if its encrypted or compressed

This one is irrelevant of NTFS or FAT. The Dos commands that are applicable are in the OS and not NTFS or FAT specific.

I think Arani pretty much answered this one with his indepth response.
