Windows 2000 Profile Ownership issues

I have a W2K server with 80 users. I decided to clean up the Profiles share to remove profiles of former users. I had problems deleting some of the folders in the Profiles share so I changed the Ownership of the Profiles Share to the Administrator account of the domain. I was then able to remove the folders without a problem. But my users had a problem....they started getting an error message about profile couldn't be accessed, logging on with local profile. I changed the Ownership back to the local admin of the server and they were fine. Does anyone know why changing from one admin to another would prohibit the profiles from loading? Just curious...

It does sound a little odd, doesn't it? I think to get to the bottom of this you'll ned to work out the effective permissions that your users have to the profiles share and, if you have roaming profiles, their folder beneath the profiles share. Consider explicit permissions, inherited permissions and permissions that derive from ownership (which it sounds like could be the key here). The effective permissions will also depend on your group memberships. A nice way to play with this without breaking anything is to create your own replica of the profiles share on the server with maybe just a few subfolders and share it. You can then create a test user or two and direct them to this source for their profiles instead.
