I hope this is the proper forum.

We have a 2000 Server (with the latest updates and service packs already installed) that cannot seem to backup on a regular basis. It is currently configured, using the stock Windows Backup, for every evening during the week at 9pm to a different tape.

We have set this up with new tapes, and each tape has been properly allocated in the media pool. Yet, after only a week or two of backups, the logs will begin to show jobs stopping with the "exit code (2d)." We have had to go back in, and allocate each tape over again a couple of times. And the same scenario occurs: a week or two of success, and then the same exit code.

Microsoft's site no longer has the article they used to for 2d, and googling brings nothing new to the table. Having followed the Microsoft recommended setup (which I realize may be a bad thing :P ) we are uncertain as to how to proceed, as the customer is not liking the idea of purchasing a backup software package.

Can anyone suggest where to go from here?

The KB article pointed to by alx looks interesting. I seem to recall coming across a similar problem in the distant past. Could you let us know if it does the job, necronian?

Sorry to take so long to respond.

We wound up replacing the tape backup after the unit itself failed and kept one of the customer's tapes. Using a new drive and all new media, we set it back up the same way, and are now watching it to see if our error occurs.

After reading the article, I took a look at the way the backup is set, and there is only one user involved, Administrator. I checked the locations like it suggested, but there doesn't seem to be a permissions conflict to my eye.

We are inclined to blame the faulty hardware, but are going to give it another week or so before declaring it fixed.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will let you know what happens.

Thanks for getting back. I've gone off tapes myself. I now use Removable Hard disks myself. I'd only go back to tape if I could afford an enterprise tape solution.
