Remember when you set the virtual memory there is a rule for the size. It should be the physical memory installed + 32. So, if your memory installed is 512 mb then add 32 = 544. Remember to set the minimum and maximum to the same number. Some people will tell you not to, but, if you set the virtual memory to the same size, then the system doesn't have to waste time expanding and contracting the memory to fit the "work" you are doing.

Picking pebbles on the shore of the networking ocean
if you have partitioned hard disks, or seperate physical hard disks, then try placing the virtual memory file or better know as swap file, onto the faster of the two drives. this will influence performance.
defrag the harddrive which has the swap file, this will result in the swap file being place ahead of all the rest of the files on the drive. this helps in easy and quick access for the OS, and will definitely improve gaming performance
