Hi,
Thanks for the advice so far. I have taken the plunge, scrounged a spare machine and installed debian on it (No windows!)
So far so good, with a few teething troubles:
1) Can't use Xconfig or menuconfig - get an error leting me know there are no rules for either of them
2) No sound working
3) No ethernet working.
I'm pretty sure I'll figure these out soon but if any of you can offer advice I ain't going to turn it down.
Thanks
Ranger

Would you mind quoting the exact input/output?
For both there is the same solution: check what is your exact hardware and make sure drivers are installed and loaded for it.
try checking your hardware ID with "lspci", then procede with configuring a linux kernel that will contain the appropriate drivers either integrated or as modules.
Check this HOWTO for more information

After much struggles with debian I have moved to Knoppix..
I now have the following working:
Sound
Ethernet
Laser printer
Colour inkjet / Scanner / Copier device (HP PSC 1110)
and a quite funky desktop.
downsides so far: No wireless networking (waiting for the hardware) and the scanner bit of the PSC 1110 isn't recognised...
nevermind... still got time to work it out.
