NIC problem

HI,
Well it seems that my network card isn't recogenized but my mardrake
box
so what can i do to tackle this problem as i don't want to remove it cause i just buy it
so i want to know if there's a generic driver for it, actually the Nic have
no manufacture name it just written on the box that's NE 2000
compatible , it works on windows but in linux it's another story
so which commans can help me to solve this.
i run Mandrake 8.0 in CLI no GUI Kernel 2.4.

If you open your server and pull out the network card, you'll be able to find the main chipset on it, usually placed in the middle of the PCI card. Let us know what chipset its using so we can help you located drivers for it and provide instructions on how to install them.

shouldn't 'dmesg' print out some info on the NIC, or is that only after a driver has been installed?

It would be more accurate to use 'lspci' utility. dmesg prints kernel messages, so without a driver to trigger the message you should not get what you want, not to mention you would have to dig through a bunch of irrelevant information.

I remember having a similar problem with Gentoo a year or so ago with an ne2000 NIC and I ended up having to add the proper module to support it in the Kernel. It really wasn't very difficult but I can't for the life of me remember how exactly I did it. You need to do a 'make menuconfig' or something like that in the kernel directory and that will take you into a menu and there you can specify support for ne2000 NICs.
