I was just curious as to if anyone on this forum has tinkered with gentoo linux. I recently pulled slack off my laptop and slapped this on it and I have found it the most customizable distro to the date, not to mention it's portage system mimics that off the BSD port tree *drool* The documentation is excellent as well, and the forums are far more helpful then a few popular distros out there.... Anyways, I just thought Id share my experience in the hopes that perhaps someone else will try it out

Yeah, everyone should give it a try. The forum and documentation is excelent, and you learn alot about Linux by installing Gentoo.
Right now I'm trying out Debian(command line only) and it's my favorite (as of now ) but everyone should definetly try out Gentoo

Debian was never my cup of tea, probably because my first experience with it was my desktop which demanded a 2.6.* series kernel because of my hardware, but then again, I do use knoppix regularly for troubleshooting and to expose people to the wonders of linux... although.. that rarely works. People are just too damn lazy to get interested in something like linux

Yep I've used it for a few years now off and on. It is my favorite distro because of the customization. It prolly won't appeal to an average user who is impatient as compiling KDE or Gnome or any other big package takes hours upon hours. And I have to agree with you about their support. The forums are by far the best I have seen for a distro. I don't think I ever even had to ask a question, I just do a search through their forum and always seem to find the answer.

Tell me about the agonizing long compilations... xorg took the entire night and the next morning to fully compile.. but it was worth it. Customized kernel, boot splash and rat poison for a wm.. I love my new system
