Which is your favourite linux distribution? was created by The_Berzerker
Hey I'm thinking about moving to another distro for a long time. I'm currently using Suse 9.2 and I'm not satisfied. I have tried several distros but I can't make up my mind on which to install next. So i'm waiting for your opinions, please specify why you prefer the distro that you vote for......

Really depends on your needs and background. I'm currently playing with Slackware 10.1 and find it clean and streamlined. It requires more configuration than some of the more popular distributions, but at the end of the day, you will have a greater understanding of how your system works. It's also popular with people from a UNIX background.

I have Slackware in a special place of my heart too
It is the most straight-forward, stable, organized and simple distribution I've seen.
Right now I am using gentoo which has some advantages on it's own, but I kind of miss Slackware's simplicity.

I prefer Gentoo above the others. But I would recommend it only for people that like to have complete control over their OS. The installation process alone taught me a great deal about Linux as you install it manually from a Liveboot CD's shell rather than watching a bar go across the screen like Redhat and Mandrake. Also, the package system is probably the best I have seen. Far better than RPMs in my opinion. Just for the record, it took my computer 23 hours to download and compile KDE after the installation on a 1.3 GHz 1024GB of RAM computer. So you lose the speed and efficiency of other distros but gain more control in terms of system customization.

I'm a Debian person... I think the package management (apt) is way better than RPM, and better than Gentoo's ports system because I don't necessarily need to spend time compiling things..
This way I get the best of both worlds..
Plus you have some very polished Debian based distros that do some really good hardware detection and provide a very useable work environment... both Ubuntu and Knoppix come to mind.
Thats where my vote went.
