FreeBSD watchdog error, tx timeout

Hello all, I recently bought a usb ethernet adapter for my laptop. I slapped FreeBSD 5.3(ONLY version that works on my laptop). It detects the drive right away as axe0 and dhclient works great. Now, when I set up my cvsup ports-supfile, it gets a little bit through the update and then gives me a watchdog error and a tx timeout on the interface.

I then try it again and, of course, it doesnt work because of name resolution. ifconfig still shows proper configuration, but to no avail. I restart, it works again, but then it cuts out at about the same time interval.... I think this is more of a datalink or network layer problem, but I cant put my finger on it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
