We are developing secured open source portal for university student database. We are in debate for Unix or Linux.

Can any one PLEASE tell us pros and cons of Unix vs Linux in respective of System management, Security and Utilities required for each of these OS.

We would appreciate your help.
Thanks in advance,

hmm there is no single operating system today that is called UNIX. So you must either be referring to one of it's more direct descendants (i.e. FreeBSD), or a UNIX standard compliant OS . Clarifying which would help :)

If its going to be a really large application etc, consider a BSD... most likely FreeBSD...

If you're looking for something easier to manage and with more 'community' support (yes, yes, bring on the flames ;)), consider Linux.

The differences are not that widespread.

To be more clear, it is decision between Sun Solaris and Linux.

We are looking for cons( System management, Security ) of Sun Solaris.

Leaving all financial differences to get the best platform for the application. System management and security are the two big issues for us.

Thanks in advance.
