OOPs, my mistake.

I was trying IPCONFIG and not IFCONFIG.

Here is the results of the IFCONFIG:
******************************************
lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:3924 Metric:1
RX packets:14 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:14 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
********************************************

I did configure the eth0 adapter from the linuxconf program and it took and showed in the network program from the Control panel correctly.

I assume the system is not seeing the adapter as you can see from the ifconfig results.

And as I mentioned PING is not there. Is it supposed to be?

Thanks,

Tom.

Thanks,

Tom

The Ping command should be available.

I'm just wondering, could it be that your nic has some type of problem and therefore the system isnt seeing it ?

Even in the event the system didn't see the nic, it should still install all related commands, including 'ping'.

Redhat 7 is also quite old, I'd recommend you move to 8 and see how it works for you. No reason dealing with older versions when there are much newer out there. Currently , Redhat v9 is the latest.

I was thinking the same thing - go to 8.

Where is the Ping program located? I couldn't find it with "find".

I have 8 from my O' Reilly book and could get 9 (only $30). I just figured I would go with that first. Is 9 much better?

Thanks,

Tom.

Tom,

I haven't tried Redhat 9 as yet. I'm running version 8 here at home and Slackware version 8.

I like to stick to the good old saying ...'If something works... don't touch it!'

The ping command is located in /bin .

Good luck with RH8 - let us know how it went.

RH8 works fine.

Connected first time. I don't know what the problem with RH7 was, but I am sure that I installed a workstation type and I know the program didn't find my Network card. So unless the newer card was causing a problem, I assume my 7.0 version had a problem and maybe that was fixed in one of the upgrades. I know someone mentioned he was using 7.3.

I could go back and try again, but it takes so long to install 8, I think I'll work with this one.

I agree.

I must be getting a LOT of experience here!

Tom.
