This topic is intended for the Linux newcomers wondering about using a 64-bit OS for their AMD processor
Those of you who are looking for a nice 64-bit Linux distro, take a look at Kubuntu 7.10's AMD64-bit distribution. I previously had Ubuntu 7.04 32-bit installed on my machine; however, I wanted to go back to the KDE desktop environment (as opposed to Ubuntu's GNOME environment) since thats what I use at the office.
Pros:
- able to process more information with the 64-bit OS, therefore more throughput on your machine and faster processing
- supports up to (as I understand it) 8GB ram (seems to work fine with my 2GB ram setup)
- Kubuntu (or Fedora) is the way to go if you like the KDE
Cons:
- no support for Adobe Flash Player at the moment (I hear they are working on it)
- a 64-bit OS may not be "necessary" at the present time given that most AMD 64-bit processors are backwards compatible, and can use 32-bit OS...
- I'll add more if I find any other potential flaws
