Downloading Knoppix LiveCD now (thank God for 6mb BB)

Instead of faffing when I get it, what is the quickest way of getting to the GRUB prompt and fixing the MBR?

Really do appreciate your help (Dont suppose you need a new job?)

Boot up into the Knoppix GUI
Open up a terminal
Run"su" to become root
Run "grub" to get to the GRUB prompt

BTW, I have empathy with your "confused" Penguin avatar as I'm still blindly feeling my way round Linux myself.
