Off Site backup server setup was created by chandak76
Hi,
I'm looking at setting up an offsite back server and I would like to know what the best solution. At the moment what happens is that i've set up one pc on the network with a shared drive where everyone saves thier daily work which I later backup to tape but lately the information is getting to large that the tapes can not backup all the data and the costs of a new tape drive are a bit expensive. What i'm thinking of doing is to set up a pc offsite where i can ftp the backup every night. My question is that is this a viable way of setting up an off site backup or are ther any better ways of doing this co so far my backup has failed twice in one week.
Thanks in advance

Either way FTP is a bad idea.. use SFTP if you're doing it remotely...
You could script it using tar and SCP as well..
There are quite a few good backup scripts readily available on the net, Give it a quick google, you'll find the right one for you.
Cheers,

Another method which I find quite fast and economical is to use USB2/Firewire external hard drives. They are reliable and fast and if you buy two or more, you could get a rotation scheme going
