3Com SuperSwitch II Admin Console Access ?

I have acquired a 3Com SuperSwitch II 3900 and can't access the Admin Console. I,m using HyperTerm / HyperAccess, connected by a DB9 to DB9 Serial cable on COM 1. Settings are : 9600,8,none,1,none and all I get is connectivity with a prompt for input but, it will not let me input anything. Does not ask for a password or anything. Is there a master reset in the case like a jumper. It will work when the router is DHCP input to ETH0 on switch. All pc's are assigned ip's. Any suggestions?

This could be a communications problem. For 3Com kit the serial lead you need must be a null-modem cable, not a straight through so check you have one of those or try an alternative lead. Also might be worth checking your lead/pc/hyperterminal combination can successfully talk to some other device to prove they are working okay. I've not used the 3900 myself but have come across a lot of 3Com over the years, and I've seen problems with serial leads and pcs more than once

I checked my cables, my terminal connection is fine. I got a little burned out with it, but I'm back on it again. I messed around with it . My results are It runs a diagnostic check like the 3com doc say it's going to do. Then it reloads, does something. This is my output:

3Com Power On Verification Rom
@(#)SCM V01.06 CA_release, Created 01/18/99 01:16:48 PM
Mode = Power-Up
Dram Detected = 8MB
boot_flags 0x2590000 watchdog timer bus monitor
Random Data test from 0x7f0000-0x7ffffc

Random Data test from 0x0-0xffffc

3900-36 3Com Switch

3900-36 3Com Switch Diagnostic
@(#)SCM V02.01 release, Created 02/05/99 06:14:11 PM

It does it's diagnostic test, then it resets:

3Com Power On Verification Rom
@(#)SCM V01.06 CA_release, Created 01/18/99 01:16:48 PM
Mode = Warm Reset - Skipping Diagnostic tests
Dram Detected = 8MB
boot_flags 0x2590000 watchdog timer bus monitor

loading sysboot --

SuperStack 3900 Boot Version 1.08

At this point, it just sits there and then I get an 8 displayed, then nothing but rubbish.

ü þ þ þ ö ô ÷ þ ü þ õ ý þ ü

Then I have to reboot.

It will work fine as a switch without Administration then it will go buggy and loose all connectivity and reconnect. Then it will do it again.
I tried different combinations on the keyboard, and it will give me a (help) display of commands but no prompt for password like the Doc says.

I did get one more output from it:

Usage: download Device Ip Address,Device Subnet Mask,Device Default Gateway,Load
Host IP Address,Load Filename,Port Number,Use Vlan Tagging(1/0),Vlan Tag,Auto N
egotiate (1/0),Flow Control(1/0),Port Speed(10/100/1000),Duplex Mode(h/f),bootFl

This comes up after rapidly tapping the enter key.
Any ideas?

When it's doing this reboot sequence, are there any lights showing on the front? It might be trying to do some kind of software upgrade and has got stuck in a loop. When you next try it, make a note of any lights that are on, and what sequence they come on/go off in and post them here. Hopefully, someone may recognise the sequence and be able to help.

Cheers

It could be this:

Problem: 01/24/01 05:27:30 Reboot - Mpc860Exception (0): machine_check
at 0x001e9934 (ddpTraceAbort + 0x17708)
Problem: Error " not enough memory in flash device "
Cause: If you upgrade from 1.0.x directly to 3.0.1 you will get the
above error messages. At code 1.0.x there is only 2MB of flash available
and 3.0.1 requires 4MB of flash.
Fix: 1) Perform a software recovery using the Switch 3900/9300 recovery procedure and please note the different download syntax to recover from this type of failure.

Once you are recovered back to 1.0.x you must upgrade to 2.0. You will
notice that the available flash memory is now 4MB so you can now upgrade
to 3.0.1.

There is no hardware upgrade needed or available for the 3900/9300. /

I've seen similar problems before on Corebuilder 3500s when people try to upgrade the firmware to too high a version for which there isn't enough memory. Can also happen if you try to upgrade by several major versions in one go as opposed to moving in steps. Looks like a trawl of the 3Com Knowledgebase to find the software reset procedure might do the trick
