Hi, I'm arguing with my teacher about arp request. Can somebody tell me what addresses is it sent to? MAC is broadcast, it is clear. He says IP is also broadcast.. Thanx

Well .. all I can say is that your teacher is not going to like this answer as he is totally incorrect!

An ARP request is clearly a Layer 2 (Datalink) function and does not contain any Layer 3 (network) headers.

As such, your correct, it's a broadcast to MAC address FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF as shown in the screenshot below:



I just hope your teacher isn't Cisco Certified, otherwise we'll have to inform Cisco about this instance :lol:

On the other hand, you can let him know that we won't say anything if he gives you an A+ for the subject and refers all future students to our site :)

I think that's a fair deal :wink:

Well.. bad news 4 u. He is Cisco certified :wink: But don't tell anyone, he's one of the best teachers, although he doesn't know how ARP worx :lol: And thanx 4 answer.
