EIGRP MIN bandwidth and delay was created by Nevins
Hello everyone,
I was recently looking at the EIGRP metric formula and I was trying to plug in the numbers. While I was successful in finding the sources and running the basic math for the EGRIP calculation I noticed that I didn't really know exactly what it was that I was plugging into the formula; which to me means I didn't understand the concept fully. At any rate what I did not understand is where min bandwidth and delay were being pulled from. Initially I thought min bandwidth was a default based on the link type that could be configured by the "bandwidth" interface command and delay also had a built in default which could be overridden by the "delay" command but my experiences after creating a lab and changing the values clearly proved it wasn't a 1:1 relationship. That being said how are those two values formulated?
Minimum bandwidth is 1544 Kbit
Total delay is 40110 microseconds

Code:
Router#show ip eigrp top 10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0
IP-EIGRP (AS 1): Topology entry for 10.0.0.0/24
State is Passive, Query origin flag is 1, 1 Successor(s), FD is 2684672
Routing Descriptor Blocks:
47.0.0.2 (Serial0/0/1), from 47.0.0.2, Send flag is 0x0
Composite metric is (2684672/2684416), Route is Internal
Vector metric:
Minimum bandwidth is 1544 Kbit
Total delay is 40110 microseconds
Reliability is 255/255
Load is 1/255
Minimum MTU is 1500
Hop count is 3
Minimum bandwidth is 1544 Kbit
Total delay is 40110 microseconds
