My comment about which port "Ping" uses was a little tongue-in-cheek. I know that ICMP is a layer 3 protocol so there's no reason why it would have a port associated with it. I had quite a lengthy discussion about it with some former colleagues when I was doing my CCNA course in preparation for the exam.
