I agree with Regeth.
I have the (mis)fortune to have to use and diagnose USB to serial devices on *lots* of laptops every week. One thing I have found is that no matter what the USB device, the Prolific USB drivers seem to be best.
I also agree that if you are going to be a Cisco or comms engineer then you *must* buy a laptop with a serial port built in. If not, then an RS232 PCMCIA card as mentioned is the next best thing. The USB converters are OK in a pinch, but they are not optimal.
As for software, I use Tera Term or Putty. Both support SSH and Telnet, and both are simple to use. Life is complicated enough already. Tera Term and Putty work. If it ain't broke, don't fix it

Very true Regeth, but I must say when I go to the TeraTerm website I just cringe. :lol:
