Hello I am new to your site, I like it so far. I actually want to see if I have answered two questions on my final exam at school correctly.

1) A router connects two networks: 193.14.10.0 and 193.14.11.0. The router is assigned the first IP address for each network and uses the standard class mask. A host has the IP address of 193.14.10.47. What default gateway will be assigned to this host?

Is the answer to # 1 - 193.14.10.0 ?

2) What is the network number for IP address 156.12.1.37 if the standard mask is used?

Is the answer to # 2 - 255.255.0.0 ?

Thanks,
Jannie

1. The default gateway cannot be a network address, or a broadcast address. If you have assigned the 193.14.10.1 and 193.14.11.1 to the appropriate interfaces, then the the node 193.14.10.47 sits on the 193.14.10.0 network. The first host address on the network has been assigned to the router interface, and it is that address (193.14.10.1) on the router interface that is the default gateway.

Likewise, any node on the 193.14.11.0 network is going to have 193.14.11.1 as it's default gateway.

2. Assuming a standard 16 bit class B mask, the network address for 156.12.1.37 would be 156.12.0.0.
