subnetting and waste of space?

Hello

I'm wondering when I read about subnetting it states all the time it would be such a waste of space using e.g.:
a 192.168.1.0/24 for only 10 devices,
another 192.168.2.0/24 for 100 devices, etc etc

I completely understand for WAN side IP addresses and the problem with the amount of IPv4 addresses but for LAN networks:

Does it slow down routers, switches using a few too big sized /24 networks?

i'm not talking about using /8 networks for only 10 hosts but would it actually matter if i did?

greetings,
GrMbL

edit: btw great site with very nice articles and info!

Makes no real difference to be honest. The only time you would probably worry about splitting subnets down is if you have been allocated a certain address space and need to subnet it for different area's of your LAN.
