Tracking Cisco Devices via Serial Number was created by skepticals
Recently, I have been purchasing a great deal of devices off of ebay and was wonder how Cisco tracks serial numbers, if at all.
For instance, I just purchased an access point. For all I know this access point was sold to me illegally. What if I went to open a TAC case on it? Would Cisco have the information on hand to track this device/serial number?

You will need a smartnet contract number.

Can't they use the serial number to see if it is on a smartnet contract?

I'd be curious to know too. My entire Cisco lab was purchased off eBay minus a router I purchased from a certified Cisco vender.

I am thinking about buying some more equipment off ebay... A PIX specifically and don't want to buy any... dirty... equipment.
