Multiple IP Address on Router was created by gagamboy
Hi Guys,
I am just curious if we can used multiple IP address in router (d-link) from ISP in able to have a faster connection? I mean if we can used 4 IPs at the sametime but using only one router.
Our ISP's here give 4 static IP address for business type broadband, so I wonder instead of using the other IPs as failover, I will used it simultaneously.
Ideas and suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance.
Cheers!

No, Link speed is generally a property of Layer 1 (physical medium) - you can not increase this by adding more Layer 3 (logical addressing). Also, you can't really use four addresses simultaneously in the true meaning of the word without confusing your ISP.

Hi gagamboy,
short answer (and definit) : No, you cannot upgrade your speed by adding IP addresses.
The multiple IP adresses are used for having multiple web-servers on your company. ftp servers, citrix servers, etc.
You can have one ip-address defined and the other 3 routed in your network, or just use some NAT-translation to connect to the servers.
So, to answer your question :
No, you can't upgrade your speed by adding IP addresss.
Your speed is most likely capped at ISP side or as novembre said related to your Layer-1 (physical) configuration.
To speed up your connection, call your ISP and say you want to pay more

Hi Guys,
Thanks for enlightening me. I've used the typical Dlink (524).
So basically, using multiple IP add does not improve speed? ok.
But can I use multiple IP using only 1 router? My ISP gave me three IPs but I only used one, as I looked into the router I think it can only handle one.
Correct me if I am wrong with any of this. Thanks.
Cheers!

Gagambo ur ISP (most ISP's) gave 3 ip addresses u might choose from the 3 if u like. u are not suppose to go outside the ones u were given. for example on a link star via sat u might be given 10.251.57.35, 36, 37. u are not to use any ip address < .35 or > .37
hey just to push more i believe in innovation if u come up with some crazy ideas on using the 3 at same time hey spread it out.
and from wat i see u are suffering from slow internet connection. u knw most times the problem might not be with the internet service it might be within ur cafe, or organization (IT organization).... do ur home work...?
