Layer 3 switching vs Routing

I'd be curious to know when to use a router for a VLAN and when to use a L3 switch. If the fact stands with Patiots post on the speeds, we can pretty much assume you choose the devices based on the performance and bandwidth your looking to pass.

We can't only look at the network view, but also the cost for a real network environment. A Catalyst 3560 which is a L3 switch costs almost double that of a Catalyst 2960 switch which is L2. Now for that large cost between the two, you could purchase a 1700 series router and create a standard VLAN.

There must be a valid reason why you choose one topology setup over the other. I guess a VLAN isn't just a VLAN.

Curiosity hits!!!

Yes the costs are high for the equipment but the perport cost is lower .

Thanks
