since you are new I would say keep getting a better picture of the Osi model understand every layer in and out and what protocols are supported at each layer. Then get some equiptment to start your own home network cheap cisco router ect. Experience is key start in the industry too working for a cable company or telco helps . Also start thinking about the ccna asap and then start learning the backbone of ISp's like ,Wavelength divison multiplexing,Sonet rings ,Atm also protocols like Mpls Bgp and Snmp hope this helps...

Also, you could try the guides here. Click the "Networking" menu (first menu on the left). There is much more to read than what meets the eye.

No prob. gagamboy
Also, if your thinking of CCNA in the near feature, I'd recommend getting your hands into the "Cisco Academy" material. Honestly, it's one of the best I've seen yet. Very clear, with flash illustrations and detailed to the bit level. I'd also recommend trying "Packet Tracer", it's a good help if your short of cisco equipment.

Hi Solo,
Thanks for the info. Yes, I am also looking to take a CCNA someday and I already started to study the cisco OSI layer and basic net configs in switches. I am now using Boson simulator and I will also try the packet tracer. Thanks a lot.
Cheers!
