multicast is a group of message that is used to send the information to a group of hosts which is in a network

to handle such type of messages router uses the protocol named as igmp

in the ip address range we have a range of which is reserved for the useage of handling the multicast group .

class D address is used for this purpose
in the class D address range there are some more addressess which is reserved for the multicast purpose

class D address have the range which starts from
224.0.0.0 - 239.255.255.255

this represents a group of hosts in a network

some addressess are reserved for some purposes

ie

224.0.0.1 - all systems on this subnet
224.0.0.2 - all routers on this subnet
224.0.0.5 - ospf routers
224.0.0.6 - ospf designated routers
224.0.0.12 - DHCP Server/ relay agent

apart from that

globally scoped addressess are

224.0.1.0 - 238.255.255.255
they are used to send multicast data between organisations and across the internet

limited scoped addressess

239.0.0.0 - 239.255.255.255
